READING A KOREAN NAME

One sound can carry more than one meaning.

A Korean given name is written in Hangeul, which shows its pronunciation. When a name uses Hanja—Chinese characters used in Korean—the chosen characters specify its morphemes and meaning. The same Hangeul name can therefore have several valid Hanja combinations—so meaning belongs to the selected characters, not to sound alone.

SOUND, MEANING, AND ACCESS

Why Hangeul and Hanja meet in Korean names

01

Why a new script was needed

King Sejong created Hunminjeongeum in 1443 so Korean speech could be written with letters ordinary people could learn more readily than literary Chinese. The explanatory Hunminjeongeum Haerye was published in 1446 with court scholars participating in its explanation and publication.

02

Why Hanja remains visible

Sino-Korean vocabulary has accumulated over centuries through scholarship, administration, translation, and contact with neighboring cultures. In personal names, Hanja can distinguish meanings shared by the same sound. Modern Korean normally writes those sounds in Hangeul, while the registered Hanja—when one is chosen—preserves a specific semantic reading.

What literacy data can—and cannot—say

Hangeul’s systematic design supports accessible reading instruction, but a writing system alone does not prove national talent or educational outcomes. The OECD’s 2023 adult-skills study found Korean adults overall below the OECD literacy average, while Korean 16–24-year-olds scored above it. We therefore avoid the unsupported claim that Korea has the world’s lowest illiteracy rate.
